Game recaps
Nov. 3 -- Oilers 17, East 14
In what was Game Ugly -- fumbles, penalties, giant chunks of negative yardage and, worst of all, a fight, the Oilers eked out a 17-14 over winless East in their season finale.
The Oilers, limited to 139 yards total offense, trailed 14-9 at the half and all through the third quarter before Bill Henderson scored on a 4-yard run with 7:08 left in the game to take the lead for good.
It came after a 39-yard punt by Kevin Ochalek to the OC 17. Dajour Stewart fumbled on the first play -- one of seven for East -- and Pat Schumacher recovered -- one of four for the Oilers. Schumacher also scored the PAT after Henderson's TD as the Oilers finished the season with a three-game winning streak.
The fight broke out after the ensuing kickoff, emptying both benches, but there were no penalties or ejections and the game resumed.
Helped by two personal foul penalties against the Oilers, the Warriors reached the 24 for a first down with 55 seconds left. After two incompletions and a sack, Andrew Fritz recovered a fumble to seal the victory.
David Greenleaf gave the Oilers a 3-0 lead in the first quarter with a 38-yard field goal, which broke the "modern day" school record he set last week against Warren.
But East scored two straight TDs in the second period to take a 14-3 lead.
The first came on an 83-yard run by Tim Jordan folloowing a 56-yard quick kick by Greenleaf. Jordan came into the game with 28 yards on six carries, but ended up leading all rushers with 134 yards on five attempts. Alondre Hamilton passed to Michael Mathis for the PAT.
The Oilers fumbled the ball back to the Warriors on the first play after the kickoff, and two players later, Hamilton, on a flea-flicker, passed to Mathis for a 30-yard TD and a 14-3 East lead.
But the Oilers were able to cut into the lead before halftime.
Dan Bouse returned the kickoff 50 yards to the East 29. Cody Johnson, Ochalek and Henderson each picked up good gains before Greenleaf hit senior Jacob Faunce for a 12-yard touchdown with 5:43 left.
The two teams traded interceptions -- Eric Decker had the Oil City pick -- before the half ended.
The Oilers reached the East 28 after the second half kickoff, but a holding call stalled that drive, and they ran out of downs. Before the Oilers scored the game-winning TD, Fritz had two hits that caused East fumbles.
Despite the long run by Jordan, the defense yielded a respectable 228 yards. Darrin Cardone and Matt Schneider also recovered fumbles.
The offense, which was in disarray after a relatively impressive first possession that resulted in the field goal, mustered only 139 yards, including 80 on the ground.
The Oilers also were penalized nine times for 75 yards.
Freshman Ben Koyack started the game at quarterback, but was on the sidelines in the second half due to an illness.

About OC field goals
There have been 20 field goals in Oil City history.
The longest, probably on a drop kick, was 45 yards by Kuhns (no first name available) against Warren in 1914.
Thirteen of those field goals came from the beginning of time through 1929, when Bill Lilly ht a 28-yard drop kick against Warren.
Then there wasn't any until Ron Black Jr. booted a 26-yarder against Meadville in 1981.
Since then Eric Korpela, Kaivon Maknoon, Brendan Brown, Mike Hopwood and Rick Copley Jr. had kicked field goals.
And the longest of those -- all using a holder -- was 32 yards by Copley. That was the game-winner against Grove City to end the 1999 season.
Hence, the "modern day" record of 35 yards by David Greenleaf against Warren.
|
David Greenleaf kicked a 35-yard field goal, scored a touchdown and threw a touchdown pass, sparking the Oilers to a 29-19 victory over Warren in their home finale.
It was the second-straight win and the first at home for the Oilers, who snapped a season-long seven-game losing streak last week at Central Tech. They'll close the season Saturday at Erie East.
Greenleaf, the senior transfer from Michigan, started and then alternated at quarterback with freshman Ben Koyack who for the second-straight game scored on a long run.
Koyack's 59-yard touchdown gave the Oilers a 29-13 lead with 2:29 to play. (The 6-5, 205-pounder scored on a 60-yard TD last week at Central).
It also pretty much sealed the deal for the Oilers, who withstood one more rally by Warren. The Dragons' second TD of the fourth quarter came on its next possession, a 10-yard run by senior QB Jeff Eaton, but his pass for the two-point conversion was batted down, preserving the victory -- but just to make sure Bill Henderson recovered the ensuing onsides kick for the Oilers.
The Oilers held the Dragons to 78 yards rushing -- the lowest total this season by the defense. They did have 210 yards passing with Eaton completing 15 of 36 throws for 209 yards, but 17 of those attempts came in the final quarter.
There were two key plays for the Oilers.
One was an interception by Mike Wise that led to a 5-yard touchdown by Henderson that extended Oil City's lead to 16-6 late in the third quarter. It came after Greenleaf's field goal snapped a 6-6 tie. Logan McMahon had sacked Eaton on the previous play.
The second came midway through the fourth quarter after the Dragons had cut the lead to 16-13. On their next possession, following a 47-yard punt by Kevin Ochalek to the Warren 24, the Dragons tried a fake punt. But Cole Boje's pass to Charlie Thomas managed only 1 yard, and the Oilers took over on Warren's 25 and soon capitalized.
Eric Decker ripped off 11 yards on the first play, and three plays later, Henderson ran for an apparent first down, but a holding penalty sent the Oilers back to the 21.
No matter.
Following a timeout, Greenleaf hit sophomore Logan Carson in the end zone for a TD and then booted the extra point to make it 23-13 with 4:23 to play.
The two teams exchanged long drives fror touchdowns in the first half, which ended in a 6-6 tie.
The Oilers scored first on Greenleaf's 3-yard run, which capped a 70-yard drive that took more than eight minutes. Greenleaf completed passes to Carson for 10 yards and Pat Schumacher for 20. A nine-yard run by Henderson on third down also kept the drive alive.
After Greenleaf boomed the ball into the endzone, Warren marched 80 yards for its first TD, a 1-yard run by Cotie Snyder.
Greenleaf kicked his field goal after the second half kickoff. A roughing the punter call kept that drive alive, and the Oilers got two sizeable gains on the double reverse by Decker and sophomore Cody Johnson.
Johnson also caught a 31-yard pass from Koyack to key the march that made it 16-6.
Despite constant pressure up from by junior tackle Matt Schneider, the Dragons answered with a 70-yard drive that ended with Eaton's 34-yard pass to Mitch McTavish.
After the Oilers made it 23-13, the Dragons pieced together a 30-yard drive before turning the ball over on downs on the Oilers 40. Koyack scored his touchdown three plays later.

Oct. 20 -- Oilers 22, Central Tech 18
Freshman quarterback Ben Koyack scored two touchdowns -- one on a 65-yard run -- as the Oilers rallied past Central Tech, 22-18, for their first victory of the season.
The lead changed hands five times before the
Oilers went ahead for good, 22-18, on a 37-yard run by junior Eric Decker on the second play of the fourth quarter.
Koyack's first TD, on a 1-yard keeper, and David Greenleaf's kick erased a 6-0 Tech lead in the second quarter.
Central had the ball for all but one Oil City three-and-out of the first quarter before scoring on a 5-yard pass from Terry Carson to Maleek Toran on the second play of the second quarter. It climaxed a 95-yard march.
Koyack's first TD came with 32 seconds left in the first half. The Oilers had a 6-yard touchdown run by Bill Klena wiped out by an illegal block, and later on during that 60-yard march, they took a 25-yard field goal by Greenleaf off the board when Tech was called for roughing the kicker.
Koyack's TD gave the Oilers their first half time lead of the season, but it was short-lived as Kaylon Mims scored on a 38-yard run for Central less than a minute into the third quarter.
But that 12-7 advantage also was short-lived as Koyack scored on his 65-yard run three plays after the kickoff. It was the longest TD run by an Oiler this season, and also gave Koyack membership in the "Mr. Versatlity Club" -- that is he has run for a touchdown, thrown a touchdown pass and caught a touchdown pass this season.
Pat Schumacher, on a trick play, added the two-point conversion, giving the Oilers an 18-15 lead.
Central would take its last lead on its next possion on Carson's 17-yard pass to Toran late in the third quarter.
Decker scored on the Oilers' next possession, and Oil City held on to end its season-long seven-game losing streak.
The two teams exchanged fumbles before the Oilers defense forced a punt and they ran out the clock.
Bill Henderson led the Oilers with 15 stops. Carson and Matt Schneider added 12 apiece. Henderson now has 81 tackles on the season.

Oct 12 -- Meadville 26, Oilers 7
By CRAIG PHILLIPS
The Derrick
It was an evening when the old adage "when it rains it pours" was never so appropriate.
Oil City -- missing leading rusher Chris Fox due to a
knee injury sustained during the week in practice -- lost yet another weapon in Corey Walters early in the first quarter Friday on its way to a 26-7 loss to visiting Meadville in Region 5 football action at the Oil Field.
The Oilers, a prohibitive underdog entering the game, opened plenty of eyes on the opening possession of the game.
Walters picked up five yards on a second-down sweep before the junior running back burst off-tackle behind the left side of his line for a 57-yard gain to the Meadville 4-yard line.
Bill Henderson, who rushed for a game-high 90 yards, picked up three yards on first down before smashing up the middle and into the end zone for a 1-yard touchdown. David Greenleaf kicked the extra point and the Oilers had their first lead of the season at 7-0 with 9:58 remaining in the first quarter.
However, not unlike the night's sky, a dark cloud loomed over the Oilers as Walters suffered a concussion on the drive and would not return to the game.
With Fox and Walters gone, the Oilers were not only missing two of their three best running backs, but also a pair of starters on defense.
And, it showed.
Meadville, which improved to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the region, answered Oil City's score with a 27-yard kickoff return by Jon Roncalato before embarking on a 15-play, 60-yard drive.
The Bulldogs picked up five first downs during the march, including a fourth-and-one conversion from the OC 41. Meadville also converted a fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line as fullback Mike Prystaloski bulled into the end zone. Chuck Szitas kicked the extra point to knot the game at 7-7 with 4:03 left in the first quarter.
Although the Oilers would not score again, they did present themselves with opportunities.
The Oilers drove 32 yards to the Meadville 28-yard line on its second possession, but a fumble recovery by Matt Knapp of the Bulldogs ended the march.
The two teams then traded possessions before Meadville used both run and pass on a nine-play, 79-yard drive to take a 13-7 halftime lead.
Following a 45-yard punt by Kevin Ochalek, the 'Dogs opened at their own 21-yard line with an 18-yard run by Toney Phillips. Eight plays later he was on the receiving end of a pass by quarterback Jarrod Kilburn for a 25-yard touchdown. Szitas' kick was short and to the right and Meadville led 13-7 with 3:03 left before halftime.
The Oilers got their first and only break on the second play from scrimmage of the second half when the defense forced Prystaloski to fumble and Henderson recovered at the OC 48.
Henderson picked up 36 yards on first down on a sweep around left end to the Bulldogs' 16, but a four-yard loss and 16-yard holding penalty thwarted the drive. Greenleaf's 49-yard field goal attempt fell three yards short.
The teams traded possessions once again with Meadville taking over on the 50 and once again Phillips sparked a drive with a 16-yard run on first down. Three plays later Kilburn found Preston Heagys for a 26-yard completion to the Oil City 10.
Prystaloski, who rushed for 82 yards on 20 carries, did the rest with a seven-yard gain and a 3-yard TD run. Oil City's Nik Klena broke up the two-point conversion pass attempt and Meadville led 19-7 with 2:53 remaining in the third quarter.
Oil City responded by once again entering Meadville territory, this time thanks to a 42-yard pass from freshman quarterback Ben Koyack to split end Mike Wise, who was tackled at the Bulldogs' 18-yard line.
However, a costly mistake ruined the opportunity as an errant pitch on second down spelled a 14-yard loss on the final play of the third quarter. The Oilers didn't recover and turned the ball over on downs.
Meadville took advantage and drove 67 yards on 11 plays for the final score.
Phillips scored his second touchdown of the game on a 25-yard cutback run with 6:15 remaining. Szitas kicked the extra point to set the final margin.
Oil City coach Bill Heber, who would not use the injuries to Fox, Walters and two-way starter Pat Schumacher as an excuse, did admit, "We have a lot of people in new positions due to injuries.
"The penalties and mistakes are costing us, and that is inexperience," he continued. "We came out and moved the football, we just couldn't convert. The kids played hard."
Notes -- Henderson had 18 tackles, followed by Andrew Fritz with 17, Eric Decker with 14, Matt Schneider with 13 and Logan McMahon and Cody Johnson with 11 apiece.

Oct. 5 -- Slippery Rock 35, Oilers 14
Junior quarterback Jonathan Powell rushed for 113 yards on 13 carries and scored the game's first touchdown on a 48-yard run as Slippery Rock beat the Oilers, 35-14.
The Rockets scored on their first three
possessions to take a 21-0 lead late in the first half.
The Oilers scored as time was running out in the first half on a 29-yard pass from freshman quarterback Ben Koyack to Mike Wise. That touchdown marked the first time this season that the Oilers had scored in the first half.
A big play of the drive was a 14-yard catch by Chris Fox on third-and-16. Two plays later, Koyack and Wise connected for an 11-yard gain.
The Oilers' second TD came with 32 seconds left in the game on a trick play -- Koyack pitched to David Greenleaf who fired a 46-yard strike to Wise.
The Oilers were inside Slippery Rock territory
two other times in the first half, the first time reaching the 14 where a fake field goal failed. Later, they advanced to the 36, but turned the ball over on downs.
Powell's TD came on Slippery Rock's third play from scrimmage. The Rock put together a 14-play, 86-yard scoring drive after the fake field goal, and then added a 10-play, 64-yard march for its third touchdown.
Slippery Rock converted three third-down plays during the 86-yard drive, and Powell completed a 28-yard pass to Zach Ejzak to the four before its third TD -- the first of three scores by Ryan Ferguson.
Koyack completed six of 16 passes for 101 yards for the Oilers. Wise had five catches for 111 yards. Fox led the Oilers with 48 yards rushing on five carries.
Andrew Fritz led the Oilers with 15 tackles. Bill Henderson had 14 and Fox added 12.

Sept. 28 -- Franklin 27, Oilers 21
Franklin's Tyler Bittner set two school receiving records as the Knights hled off the Oilers, 27-21.
Bittner, a junior, caught 14 passes for 216
yards. He scored three touchdowns covering 45, 3, and 30 yards as the Knights built a 20-0 lead after their first possession of the second half.
The Oilers came storming back behind freshman quarterback Ben Koyack -- the fifth signal caller they've used this year -- and even had a chance to post their first victory of the season.
After they cut the lead to 27-21 on a 15-yard run
by Corey Walters with 6:58 to play, Andrew Fritz recovered an onsides kick.
On the next play, the 6-5, 215-pound Koyack found Pat Schumacher deep on a streak pattern, but Julian Wested deflected the pass to save what appeared to be a sure touchdown.
Wested, also a junior, completed 19 of 32 passes for 295 yards on offense -- the most ever passing yardage by a Knight against the Oilers.
The Knights scored their first TD early in the second quarter, and made it 13-0 on a fourth-down pass with 28.5 seconds left in the first half. Nick Switzer stopped Wested short of the sticks on the PAT after a bobble on the snap.
The Oilers got on the board on a 40-yard run by Chris Fox in the third quarter. overcoming a 13-yard loss on first down. There were three 13-yard positive gains on the drive -- the first by Fox and two more by Koyack.
After a 59-yard touchdown by junior Brandon Perrine made it 27-6, the Oilers scored two straight TDs, the first a 28-yard run by Bill Henderson..
Walters also had a 13-yard on a reverse and a
35-yard reception during the drive in which he scored his TD.
The Oilers had one last shot after a fumble recovery by Henderson, but Franklin held.
The Oilers finished with a season-high 254 yards. Fox led with 70 yards on 11 carries and added an interception and a fumble recovery.
Linebacker Andrew Fritz led the Oilers with 12 tackles and Henderson added 11. Fox had nine.

Sept. 21 -- General McLane 54, Oilers 0
Scoring almost at will, reigning Class AAA state champion General McLane throttled the winless Oilers, 54-0.
The Lancers scored three quick touchdowns
late in the opening quarter -- their first TD came with 4:19 left in the opening quarter -- and built a 34-0 halftime lead. The mercy rule went into effect -- for the fourth straight time for Oil City -- after they took a 41-0 lead in the third period.
General McLane rolled up 428 yards total offense -- 376 on the ground -- and forced five turnovers. The Lancers also recovered an onsides kick.
The Oilers did move the ball the first half -- advancing into GML territory three times and
twice reaching the 19 -- but couldn't get anything going after losing quarterback David Greenleaf to a shoulder injury with 6:34 to play in the second quarter.
Greenleaf didn't return, and the Oilers were down to their fourth-string quarterback, sophomore Steve May.
Nick Heasley injured a knee last week against Titusville and will have surgery Sept. 28. He's out indefinitely. Pat Schumacher has been moved to wide receiver.
After McLane took the 21-0 lead, Chris Fox returned the kickoff 39 yards to the Lancers 47. His 26-yard sprint gave the Oilers a first down on thr 23, but they fumbled the ball away on the 19.
The Oilers later turned the ball over on downs at the 19 after Fox's 49-yard interception return to the 28. On fourth down and less than a yard to go, Greenleaf was stood up at the line of scrimmage and that's when he injured his shoulder.
Oil City ran just 10 plays the second half, turning the ball over twice on its four possessions. McLane held the Oilers to a season-low 67 yards total offense.
Defensively, junior Eric Decker was in on 12 tackles and blocked an extra point.

Sept. 14 -- Titusville 41, Oilers 0
Derek Carr ignited the 41-0 rout with a 93-yard kickoff return to open the game and finished with four touchdowns as state-ranked Titusville handed the winless Oilers their third-straight mercy-rule defeat.
The Rockets, who are ranked eighth in Class AAA by the Pennsylvania Football News and No. 1 in the Bill Born Index, needed only 14 seconds to get on the board. They were in the mercy rule with 7:01 remaining in the first half.
Carr carried 13 times for 123 yards, also scoring on runs of 11, 26 and 10 yards.
Senior quarterback Andrew Clark completed five of nine passes for 118 yards, including a 29-yarder to Stephen Henderson for a touchdown.
The Oilers missed an opportunity on their first possession when freshman Ben Koyack overthrew a wide-open Mike Wise on a throwback pass. Koyack caught a pass from behind the line of scrimmage from
David Greenleaf, the 6-5, 210-pound senior transfer from Michigan, who was making his first start at quarterback.
The Oilers got into Titusville for the first time following a 34-yard kickoff return by Chris Fox after the Rockets had taken the 35-0 lead.
Their best scoring opportunity came after the Rockets made it 41-0, but turned the ball over on downs at the 10.
The drive included a 13-yard pass from Greenleaf to Pat Schumacher, a 12-yard run by Jacob Rothschild and a 12-yard run by Corey Walters.
Titusville was poised to score again before the game ended, but, mercifully, took a knee.

Sept. 7 -- Harbor Creek 35, Oilers 14
Starting only one drive in its own territory, Harbor Creek scored on its first five possessions and throttled the Oilers, 35-14.
Eric Divell carried 14 times for 123 yards and scored four
touchdowns on runs of 35, 1, 5 and 24 yards.
His fourth TD, following an Oiler fumble, came with 8:02 to play in the first half and put the "mercy rule" into effect for the second half.
The Oilers, "mercy ruled" for the second straight game, fell to 0-2, but scored their first points of the season -- both touchdowns coming in the fourth quarter.
The first TD came on a 3-yard run by quarterback Pat Schumacher, and then second came on Schumacher's 12-yard pass to freshman tight end Ben Koyack.
Senior transfer (from Michigan) David Greenleaf booted both extra points, and attempted a 49-yard field goal that fell some five yards short on the last play of the game.
The Huskies' (2-0) first scoring drive was their longest -- 59 yards on six plays. The others covered 16, 49, 29 and 24 yards. Ben Schauble's 51-yard punt return set up the Huskies' second touchdown.
Oil City, meanwhile, went three-and-out on its first four possessions before fumbling the ball away on its fifth. Making matters worse for the Oilers was a knee injury to junior quarterback Nick Heasley on the Oilers' second offensive play of the game. He didn't return.
Chris Fox led the Oilers with 69 yards on nine carries. He had runs of 18 and 35 yards to spark the Oilers' first scoring drive. An 11-yard run by Bill Henderson ignited the 25-yard march for their second TD.

Sept. 1 -- Strong Vincent 39, Oilers 0
Averaging nine yards a carry, Strong Vincent had little trouble with the Oilers. posting a 39-0 victory in the opener for both teams.
The state-ranked Colonels scored three touchdowns in the opening quarter and held a 25-0 halftime lead. The mercy rule went into effect when they scored their sixth touchdown of the game with 3:37 left in the third quarter.
Vincent rolled up 437 yards rushing and 464 yards total offense. The 437 yards ranks No. 4 all-time for opponents against the Oilers.
Last year, in a 68-0 romp, the Colonels ran for 504 yards and collected 597 total yards, both No. 1 for opponents against Oil City.
The Vincent defense, meanwhile, limited the Oilers to four first downs and 77 yards total offense.
