The first half of the Oilers' schedule is brutal, make no mistake about it.
"The front end of our schedule is just absolutely loaded. I'd put it up against just about anybody in the state," sixth-year coach Bill Heber says.
"We play the defending (Class AAA) state champion (General McLane) in the fourth week, we open up with the team (Strong Vincent) that beat them in the regular season. The third game we play Titusville and they should have beaten McLane in overtime (in the District 10 playoffs) and the week before at their own field (to end the regular season.)," Heber says.
Then add in Harbor Creek, the Oilers' Week 2 opponent that was 8-3 and a Class AA playoff team in 2006. "We have nobody that had a losing record and even Franklin, who we beat fifth game last year, they went 6-4. So they had a winning record (and a victory over Strong Vincent to boot.) So every team we play in the first five weeks had a winning season last year," Heber says.
The Oilers will be going up against all this with a young team that's also fighting injuries at the moment.
"So we're just hoping that we want to be as competitive as possible and improve every week. That's our goal right now," Heber says.
OFFENSE
Quarterback -- It's still up in the air between junior Nick Heasley (5-7, 180) and senior Pat Schumacher (6-4, 170), both lettermen. Heasley, who wasn't listed on the roster as a QB, made his first start at that position against Meadville last year, and rushed for 70 yards on 15 carries and completed seven of nine passes for 99 yards. He finished the season with 224 yards total offense, completing 11 of 18 passes for 147 yards and two TDs (with no interceptions.) Schumacher has seen limited action the last two seasons, throwing 35 passes for 115 yards.
Backs -- Junior Andrew Fritz (5-10, 200) is at fullback where
he'll be spelled by senior Kevin Ochalek (5-9, 170). The Z-back is senior Chris Fox (5-7, 170). He'll be backed by junior Corey Walters (5-9, 155). Senior Bill Henderson (5-9, 170), a starter last season, will be at halfback. His understudies are sophomore Cody Johnson (5-5, 150) and juniors Eric Decker (5-9, 150) and Bill Klena (5-8, 150), who is also working out at Z-back. Henderson is the Oilers' leading returning rusher with 195 yards on 43 carries. His lone TD in 2006 was a 25-yarder that sent the game with Franklin into overtime. Fox had a big game against Slippery Rock, catching three passes -- two for TDs -- for 110 yards. His 43-yard reception on a fourth-and-22 play set up a touchdown.
Split end -- Erstwhile basketball star Nolan Carll (6-1, 150), a junior, and senior Nick Klena (5-10, 165). Freshman Dallas Williams (6-0, 150) could also see playing time.
Tight end -- Junior Kyle Winger (6-2,240), freshman Ben Koyak (6-5, 205) and junior Steve Frank (6-0, 185) have been rotating at tight end and tackle.
Line -- Senior Zach Smith (5-10, 255) is a three-year starter
at center. The guards will be junior Nick Switzer (6-0, 227), already a two-year letterman, and senior Seth Perry (6-1, 255). Switzer was a part-time starter last year. "Tackle is wide open," Heber says. "There's about a four- or five-way fight for the two starting tackle positions." Many of the candidates at tackle are nursing injuries -- none of them season-ending -- including senior Joe Drelick (6-0, 242), the only other lineman with a lot of experience. He was injured pre-camp and will be out until September. So right now juniors Andy Stubler (6-1, 285) and Matt Schneider (6-1, 205) are the front-runners with junior Travis Sharp (6-0, 300) and a couple of younger players who are just starting to take snaps behind them. Junior Matt Snedden (6-0, 270) is also pushing for a job on the line.
DEFENSE
Line -- Smith and junior Keith Shirey (5-11, 270) with Sharp,
Perry and others rotating in at tackle. The ends will be Switzer, senior Logan McMahon (6-1, 180), Schneider and senior David Greenleaf (6-5, 210).
Outside linebackers -- Ochalek and Walters who will be back up by Koyak and sophomore Logan Carson (5-10, 150).
Inside linebacker -- Henderson and Fritz. Henderson was a starter on defense last season, and Fritz started the last four games there.Their understudies are Johnson, senior Robert Bogdan (6-1, 215), sophomore Brandon Xander (5-8, 220) and Frank.
Secondary -- Carll and Fox at the corners and Heasley at
safety. Fox started at corner last season. Junior Steve Plumer and Fox could also play safety. Backup corners are Nick and Bill Klena, Williams.
SPECIAL TEAMS
David Greenleaf and Kevin Ochalek will handle the place kicking and kickoffs. Bogdan and Ochalek are the top two punters, but the Oilers are looking for one more punter, so Heber plans to give Koyak a shot.
