WINNIPEG - Former Oil City High School and West Virginia University standout Ben Lynch has signed a contract with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League.
Lynch, a first-team All-Big East selection at nose tackle, attended the Washington Redskins' minicamp before having a tryout with the New York Giants of the National Football League.
“It was the same situation in both cases,” Lynch said in a telephone interview May 31 from Winnipeg's Canada Inn Polo Park. “I did well, but their rosters were already full. They checked me out to see if they would be interested if they had injuries and needed insurance.”
So, Lynch signed one-year contract with a one-year club option with the Blue Bombers.
He flew from Pittsburgh to Chicago on May 27 before arriving in Winnipeg on May 28 when he took his physical.
On May 29, the team began two-a-day practices and their first preseason game will be June 10 on the road against the Edmonton Eskimos with another matchup against Edmonton to follow on June 16 at Winnipeg.
The season opener is scheduled for June 25 at Saskatchewan against the Rough Riders.
Lynch, who is competing for a job as an inside defensive tackle in a four-man defensive front, said he is running second team.
“I sprained ligaments in my left ankle on (May 29), but I played through it and it's better now,” Lynch said. “Someone rolled up on it.”
And, for now, more two-a-day practices.
