Notes and Stats

The Oilers won the Alpha Phi Cup -- Alpha Phi was a Franklin organization -- despite a 3-4-3 record and a 19-0 loss to Meadville in their first Cup game of the season...But they beat Titusville and Franklin (in the first game the two teams played that year) to finish with a 2-1 record, and clinched the Cup when Meadville (1-1-1) tied Titusville (1-1-1), 7-7, on Thanksgiving Day...

The Oilers beat Titusville, 7-0, the week before on Hugh "Spood" Olmes' 55-yard touchdown pass to Art Clinger with 2:30 to play...Stew Wilson added the extra point and earned a new suit for that. (His dad, W.S. Wilson of West Third Street, told Stew he'd buy him a new suit if he "kicked a goal.")...The Oilers didn't play Titusville in 1921 due to "some sort of squabble" between the two schools...

Olmes scored twice and threw a touchdown pass to John "Red" Foley in the Oilers' 32-6 Cup win over Franklin...Foley had at least 4 catches for 79 yards...Dick Cleaves averaged 40 yards a punt, and, according to The Derrick, "some went as far as 60."...Herb Eckert's 74-yard run to the 1 set up Franklin's only touchdown...

Olmes also scored two TDs and threw for another against Youngsville...Vaughn also scored twice, once on a 50-yard interception return...Fred "Fuzzy" Moore added a 19-yard touchdown...

Aside from that, the season was fairly dull, although the Oilers rebounded from a 26-0 loss to Warren earlier in the season to tie the Dragons, 0-0, later on...The Oilers' TD in the first game came on a 10-yard run by Olmes, who completed passes to Wilson for 17 yards and Clinger for 16 during the drive...

Miller-Sibley Field was almost ankle-deep in mud for the Oilers' season-ending 0-0 tie on Thanksgiving Day to Franklin...A special trolly was lined up to take fans to Franklin...It would leave Center Street at 1:30 p.m...The cost was 50 cents round-trip...

Olmes scored 37 of the Oilers' 89 points...He scored 6 touchdowns and threw 3 TD passes...Vaughn added 3 TDs...
