Notes and Stats

Home games were moved to the West End field from Hasson Ramage, which school officials said was too rough...

Funny, the only games the Oilers were scored on, they lost, but they won a leg of the Alpha Cup...Their first touchdown of the season came on a 55-yard interception return by Al Henderson in Week 3 against Erie East...

Three of the TDs in the first game against Franklin came on runs of 25, 25 and 21 yards by Henderson, Bob Moran and Walter "Spike" McLain...O'Day rushed for 133 yards and Moran added 71...Moran scored the first three TDs against Meadville on runs of 1 and 18 yards and the Oilers' only TD pass of the season, an 18-yarder from Henderson...Henderson later scored on runs of 18 and 55 yards  before McLain added a 35-yard interception return...Henderson also had a 70-yard TD called back...

Ray "Chubby" Williams' 2-yard TD with just over a minute left clinched the Oilers' win over Sharon in which they handed the Tigers their first loss of the season...Henderson kicked both extra points -- Moran scored the other TD from the 1 -- and rushed for 98 yards on 12 carries, according to The Derrick play-by-play...

But then came two straight losses to Warren and Steubenville, Ohio...Meanwhile, Greenville canceled a scheduled game, saying it was unable to bring a team...Later, it was learned that the PIAA was on Greenville's case for using ineligible players...

McLain's 64-yard TD highlighted the win over Titusville...Henderson scored from the 35 and O'Day from the 25...Williams kicked three extra points...In fact, three different Oilers -- Henderson, Williams and O'Day -- kicked extra points during the season...

O'Day registered two 55-yard runs in the second game against Franklin...One came on a 55-yard interception return for a touchdown...The other came from scrimmage and set up Williams' 3-yard TD...Floyd Malcolmson's fumble recovery set up a 1-yard TD by Moran...

Moran finished with a team-leading 8 touchdowns...Henderson scored 5 TDs and 38 points, including 8 extra points...O'Day added 4 TDs and 26 points...McLain hit paydirt 3 times, and Williams scored 2 touchdowns and 4 extra points...
