Notes and Stats

The Oilers scored nine of their 19 touchdowns against Union City, Harley Johnston leading the way with his only three TDs of the season...One of them was a 40-yard Interception return...Howdy Jones also had a pick to set up a TD...Dan DunLany scored from the 27 and 18, and Morry Liddle also had an 18-yard touchdown...

The team left Lincoln Junior High in private cars at 10 a.m. for its game at Sharpsville...The entourage planned to stop in Mercer for lunch on the way and dinner on the way back...

Wilmer Watkins' 65-yard interception return for a touchdown was the difference in the first meeting with Franklin...The Oilers scored two safeties, one after a blocked punt by Tom Borland...

The Oilers also planned to "leave by motor" at 10 a.m. for their game at Warren -- a 2:30 p.m. kickoff at Russell Field...The itinerary called for a stop in Pittsfield at noon for lunch...Oil City fans were invited to attend a dance afterward at the Warren Outing Club...

DunLany passed for at least 122 yards against the Dragons, including TDs to Bill Hershelman for 10 yards and Bill Lilly for 35...Another pass to Lilly covering 30 yards set up the TD to Hershelman...Lilly dropped kicked the ball from his 28 for a field goal after Borland recovered a fumble...Johnny Waitkus scored on an 18-yard run after Phil "Nooky" Olmes ran 22 yards on the previous play...That drive also included a  "triple" pass to Waitkus for 25 yards, although it wasn't reported who threw the ball...

The Oilers handed Titusville its first loss of the season, scoring in the fourth quarter on a 44-yard pass from Waitkus to Lilly and Lilly's kick...Waitkus also intercepted a pass at the goal line with 30 seconds left to preserve the victory...The win left the Oilers, Titusville and Franklin in a three-way tie in the Murphy Cup race...

But Meadville, which had yet to play a Cup game, ended the Oilers' hopes the next game...The Oilers tied the Alumni on an extra point kick by Lilly that missed, but since the Alumni was offside, the Varsity got the point...

The Sharon score represented a vast improvement from the 108-0 thrashing of 1928...Sharon scored 29 points in the last quarter, all by first-stringers...

Olmes blocked a punt and recovered in the end zone for the game's only TD against Franklin...

Olmes and DunLany each scored four TDs, Olmes leading with team with 26 points...Lilly matched Johnston with 3 TDs, and scored 22 points...DunLany threw four touchdown passes ...Liddle and Lilly each accounted for 4 PATs...
