Notes and Stats

Coming off and unbeaten season in which some key regulars were returning, there was a lot of interest in the community about the 1931 Oilers, so much so that coach Hud Wells was asking spectators to stay away from practice...A headline in the Sept. 12 edition of The Derrick read, "Oilers Start Secret Drills Monday"...

It was also announced that all games would be broadcast on the radio through the courtesy of Pennzoil and the Firestone Tire and Rubber Co...Later it was announced that game programs would be sold...

Five different players -- Chuck Dale, Bill Lilly, Al Sampsell, Johnny Waitkus and Leo Chacona -- scored touchdowns in the opener against Union City...Dale scored on a 65-yard interception for the game's first TD...Chacona scored on a 25-yard pass from Waitkus...Bill Ziegler scored on a 41-yard run and intercepted a pass in the win over Corry...

Lilly, Waitkus and Sampsell each scored twice in the first game with Franklin...One of Lilly's TDs came on an 85-yard punt return in which tackle Gene Stoughton "came out of nowhere" at midfield "and took both of the waiting Franklin players off their feet..., " according to the paper...

Later, Derrick sports editor Main Rich wrote "Gene Stoughton, who may go down in Oil City history as the greatest linemen whoever picked off four men at one time, has played some brilliant football in the past season for the Blue and White, bit I doubt if he ever played so much football in one afternoon as he did against Franklin Saturday. He completely demoralized the Franklin backfield, broke through time and time again for devastating tackles and seemed to sense every play in time to maneuver himself into a position to work a hardship on Franklin's attempts to gain..."

Chacona caught two 40-yard passes from Lilly against Warren...One went for a TD and the other set up a 5-yard run by Waitkus for another score...The other TDs were also long: a 50-yard run by Waitkus and a 40-yard interception by Sampsell...Warren reached the Oiler 35 once, the closest any team had come to the Oil City goal to date...

Lilly scored four touchdowns and passed for two more against Titusville...He scored on runs of 35, 55, 28 and 25 yards, and threw one scoring pass to Chacona and the other to Gordon "Dode" Porter for 25 yards...All four of his TD runs came around end in which he got key blocks by Stoughton...Here's how the paper described them: "Four times Lilly circled around end and picked up Stoughton...and went went forward toward the goal line, completely protected by the Oiler tackle who left a path of carnage in the form of Titusville players in his wake...Not once in these interfering masterpieces was Stoughton spilled."...

That gave Lilly seven touchdowns rushing and four passing against the Rockets in the last two years...Porter also blocked a punt that Sherrill Sager recovered in the end zone for a touchdown in that game...

Lilly scored on runs of 30 and 89 yards against Meadville...He also had a 33-yard run to set up his 3-yard score against Grove City...Interceptions by Ziegler and Waitkus set up two scores; Sager and Sampsell also had picks for the Oilers...

So that gave the Oilers a 7-0 record going into their home game with Sharon, played before 3,000 fans at Halyday Run..Stoughton (arm injury) and Lilly (knee) were both hurting as the Tigers ended Oil City's 17-game unbeaten streak...In fact, neither played in the finale against Franklin, which was the last Thanksgiving Day game between the two teams...Both were originally injured in the Meadville game...Waitkus scored four touchdowns against Franklin, and returned punts 23 and 12 yards to set up two TDs...An interception by Ziegler set up another touchdown, and Chacona scored on a 30-yard fumble return...

Waitkus finished the season with 13 touchdowns and 82 points...Lilly had 11 TDs and 71 points...Sampsell scored 6 touchdowns and 44 points...Stoughton won the Blizzard/Printz popularity contest, totaling 18,840 votes...Guard Mike Muldoon was second with 11,295...Eighteen players attracted votes...

Following are the Titusville Herald and Meadville Tribune All-Skillen teams. The Derrick's isn't listed because that page is missing in the microfilm both at The Derrick and at the Oil City Library...Main Rich chided Meadville Tribune sports editor Johnny Johnson for only putting Stoughton on the second team.
