 Notes and Stats

Mitchell Avenue Field was dedicated Saturday,
Ryan
Sept. 24, before the 39-0 victory over Union City...Bill Ryan scored the first touchdown on a 34-yard run...The American Legion band led a pep parade through principal downtown streets before the game...Dedication ceremonies began at 2:45 p.m., and included a speech by school board president R.M. Stanton...

The Derrick said, "The most striking thing about the field besides its completeness is its beauty. The perfect greensward forms a center circled by a track not yet completed."... A cable supported by a post painted blue and white surrounded the field to prevent an overflow by spectators... The complex also included a  "modern, protected" ticket booth... The upperside stands seated 1,200. Temporary bleachers on the other side of the field seated 2,000... Three tennis courts were being built by the time the season ended...When completed the tract was expected to provide for football (including a practice field next to the regular field), baseball and tennis...

Meanwhile, the team was expected to be lighter than last year's. Said coach Hud Wells, "I don't expect the Oilers to average more than 150 pounds this year. That is going to be a pretty fair-sized football team, at that, but won't be as heavy as the Blue and White a year ago." ...

Willard Ziegler and Al Sampsell each scored twice against Union City...Ziegler's TDs came on runs of 5
Chacona
and 13 yards...Sampsell's TDs came on 1-yard runs... The first came on fourth down and the second came after Leo Chacona recovered a fumble and Joe Szafran ran 34 yards...Ryan also had an interception and Sherrill Sager blocked a punt and on one series batted down a pass and threw a runner for a 7-yard loss...

Szafran and Ziegler scored on 2-yard runs against Corry. A 35-yard pass from Ryan to Ziegler set up Szafran's TD...

But then the Oilers were shut out four straight games and five of the last six...Warren and Meadville were unbeaten when the Oilers played them. In fact, Warren had outscored opponents 107-0 after beating Oil City for its fifth win...Two blocked punts and an interception were the difference in the Titusville game...

Only a touchdown in the waning minutes against Grove City prevented the Oilers from being blanked in the last six games...A 17-yard punt return and a 25-yard pass from Ryan to Chacona to the 12 set up Sampsell's 2-yard TD run in the "Alumni Day" game...

Chacona, Sager, Sampsell, Ziegler, Pete Bell and Chuck Martin all missed at least part of the season with injuries...
