Notes and Stats
The Oilers played three great games during this injury-riddled season, beginning with Corry and Girard at the start, and ending with Titusville in the middle...In fact, the win over the Rockets was one of the greatest in Oiler history since Titusville had most of its players back from a 1932 team that posted a 19-0 victory over Oil City...
But Alfred "Pete" Bell, a 200-pounder, scored
four touchdowns on runs of 2, 2, 6 and 3 yards, and added two PATs...His 27-yard pass to Dick Bickel set up the first TD, and his 14-yard run on a reverse after Joe Wojtowicz recovered a fumble on the Rocket 25 set up the second...A 22-yard run by Joe Szafran set up Bell's third TD...
Johnny Toth scored the last two touchdowns on runs of 3 and 22 yards...Szafran's 10-yard pass to Bell led to Toth's first score, and his interception set up the second...
Toth scored on a pair of 4-yard runs in the win over Corry...Turnovers set up three of the
TDs...Alex Synowski recovered a blocked punt, and then Bell ran 15 yards from scrimmage before scoring from the 1...Wojtowicz's fumble recovery on the 14 led to Toth's first TD...Toth had a 22-yard run on the Oilers' previous possession...Bill Copley returned a fumble 8 yards for the final TD...Bell's 26-yard sprint set up Toth's second TD...Szafran had a 60-yard punt return called back by a penalty...The game ended with the Oilers on the 4, thanks to a 28-yard pass from Bell to Szafran...
Toth scored two more TDs on short runs against Girard...Szafran's 28-yard punt return set up the first score, and Bell's 25-yard run led to the second....A 30-yard run by Wojtowicz on a reverse led to Bell's 6-yard TD...Bell gobbled up 42 of the 60 yards on the Oilers' last scoring drive, which ended with a 4-yard run by Wojtowicz...Toth and Bell both converted drop kicks for extra points...This game ended with the Oilers on the 8, courtesy of a 12-yard run by Szafran and a 30-yard pass from Szafran to Jack Walker...
But the Oilers were shut out the next two games, and four of the last six...They racked up 21 first downs against Warren, but couldn't find the end zone...Future Pitt All-American Bill Daddio scored on a 67-yard run in Meadville's victory...The Oilers were deep in Franklin territory three times, but lost the ball on downs at the 9 and 3 the first two times...A Toth pass to Walker, who made a sensational leaping catch, got them to the 3 again. Toth was about to score, but slipped as he was crossing the goal. The ball flew out of his arms and was recovered by Franklin's Nick Monarch...The game was played at Miller-Sibley in a cold wind during the first half and sleet and snow in the second...
Bell scored on a 71-yard run against Grove City...The Oilers also picked up two safeties on blocked punts...Sherd Stoudt blocked the first on a "return" punt after an Oiler punt pinned the Eagles on their 3. The ball rolled out of the end zone for the two points...The whole line broke through to block a second punt later on...
Bell was elected honorary captain at the end of the season. He led the Oilers with 7 touchdowns and 48 points...Toth added 5 TDs and 32 points...
