Notes and Stats
Bill Ross led the Oilers with 5 touchdowns and 32 points, including a 25-yard "stolen ball" TD against Franklin...Three of his
other TDs came on runs of 70, 32 and 18 yards...Ross also threw a 17-yard scoring pass to George "Zu" Richardson, kicked an extra point, passed to Richardson for two others and ran for a fourth...
Don Taylor had two big fumble
recoveries, one of which he returned 60 yards for a TD, and another that set up Ross' 32-yard TD run against Titusville...Dick Stahlman's blocked punt that was recovered by Wimpy Ward set up Ross' 18-yard scoring run against the Rockets...
Taylor blocked two punts in the
upset of Greenville...The first rolled into the end zone for a safety and Richardson fell on the other in the end zone for a TD...Frank Hajduk made a big interception in the fourth quarter of that game...The Oilers' win over Corry also was considered an upset, but they fumbled seven times in losses to DuBois and Grove City...
The passing play of the year -- a 31-yard completion -- set up Hajduk's 2-yard plunge against Meadville. Here's how The Derrick described it, "In one of the finest passing plays ever seen here, Chuck Shaner took the ball from center, tossed backward to Ross who faded even deeper and then hurled an aerial to Richardson who was stopped on the Meadville 17."...The Oilers were 19-69-8 on the season passing for 333 yards...The opposition outgained them overall 1,835 yards on 365 plays to 1,322 yards on 351...Hajduk matched Richardson with 2 TDs...The Oilers were outweighed in every game they played except one...
