Notes and Stats

The Oilers gained a tie with Grove City -- a team they had little success against in the '30s and '40s -- on George Hinske's 3-yard run, which climaxed an 84-yard drive...The Oilers also were turned away at the Grove City 5, 19, 18 during the game...Backup Paul Schell scored on a 25-yard run against Bradford and gained 60 yards on 2 carries...

Hinske threw scoring passes of 16 yards to Stew Anderson and 12 yards to Dick Dodd against Warren...Dodd also had catches of 48 yards and 22 yards, giving him at least 3 receptions for 82 yards for the game...The Oilers had 5 completions for 106 yards in the game, but it wasn't reported who had the other catch -- or who threw the pass...

The Oilers scored twice in the fourth quarter to overcome Johnsonburg on Jerry Boyles' 19-yard pass to Ernie Lewis and Hinske's 30-yard run...

Hinske led the Oilers with 6 touchdowns and 3 extra points and threw 3 scoring passes...He rushed 16 times for 73 yards against Butler, one of the few times an individual rushing statistic was reported in those days...

Some great names -- such as Peaches Dolecki and Blotto Womer -- dotted the Oiler roster...The Oilers' average attendance in five home games was 2,814 -- best in school history...Attendance at the Oil City-Franklin game was listed as 3,953...

The 1947 Oilers scrimmaged Emlenton a few weeks after the regular season ended, and came away with a 21-6 victory. Boyles scored two TDs, one on a 70-yard run, and all three extra points...
