Notes and Stats

Junior Dutch Burch, who played guard as a sophomore, ran 29 yards on the first play of the drive and scored on a 1-yard run for the only touchdown in the Titusville game...Jim "Red" Blaney, rangy junior end,  was all over the field making tackles and batting down passes and caught a couple of Burch passes for sizable gains, the paper reported...Bob Jeffrey, Bill Capanaro, Bill Constable, Ed Cook and Doug Clinger also starred on defense, the paper said...

The Oilers helped  inaugurate Greenville's new Stewart Field...

Funny how in a two-win season the only other victory would come against  Butler, a big WPIAL school, which was 0-7 after playing the Oilers...Constable's 5-yard run for a TD and his extra point were the difference...The 79-yard scoring drive also included a 38-yard pass from Burch to Blaney, who made a leaping catch and took the ball to the Bulter 31...Constable was filling in for Capanaro, who was injured during the drive...Butler moved to the Oiler 18 before it was over, but was denied further by Heath Radcliffe's interception...

Sharon broke a 6-6 third-quarter tie with a two-TD fourth...Clinger scored on a 23-yard double reverse for the Oilers' only TD...

Ted Marchibroda scored both TDs in Franklin's win over the Oilers, one on a 79-yard kickoff return...The Oilers blocked a punt and Lou Osenider recovered on the 13 to set up Bob Quinn's 11-yard dash for Oil City's first score. Bob Porter added the extra point...Burch's 34-yard punt return led to Oil City's second TD, an 8-yard run by Constable, but the Knights blocked Porter's try for the point...The game ended with Quinn making a sensational diving catch of a Burch pass good for 17 yards to the Franklin 12...Stats for Marchibroda's last high school game: 4-10-1 for 50 yards passing and 66 yards rushing on 18 carries. Quinn made the INT...

Quinn, Constable and Cook each scored 2 TDs, and Burch threw 3 TD passes on the season...Burch's 45-yard pass to Quinn keyed an 81-yard scoring drive against Grove City that ended with Quinn's 8-yard run...Burch also threw a 32-yard scoring pass to Blaney against Greenville, and a 37-yard TD pass to Cook against Warren following an interception by Radcliffe...The Oilers trailed 7-6 at the half against the Dragons...
