Notes and Stats

The Oilers had a real chance of winning the Section 2 championship, but a 13-12 loss to Corry on a snow-covered Mitchell Avenue Field gave Meadville the title...Oil City and Meadville were 2-0-1 when the Oilers took on Corry in a game played amid swirling snow...Corry scored the winning touchdown late in the game after converting a third-and-21 from the Oiler 44 on a 26-yard Statue of Liberty play...That the Oilers went into the game without starting tackle Carl Archible didn't help. Archible broke his leg in practice the Tuesday before the game...

The Oilers got off to a good start on the season despite a two-TD effort by third team all-stater Donnie Bird, who scored on a 50-yard run and a 90-yard kickoff return for Titusville...It was 6-6 after three quarters when the Oilers went ahead on Bob McFadden's 1-yard TD that was set up by Bill Dempsey fumble recovery on the Rocket 32...Later, Herb Toy blocked a punt and Bert Zweig made a 43-yard return for the Oilers' third TD...

Oil City was 1-2 overall and Warren was 3-0, all in Section 2, when the Oilers registered a 9-0 upset...Bob Geer's blocked punt led to a safety, and the OIlers nursed that lead until Don Higbee returned one of his three interceptions in the game 15 yards for a touchdown...

Warren had scored 10 TDs in its first three games, but didn't get past the Oiler 30...Coach John Kaufman noted the Dragons liked to run a lot of their plays right over the left guard on defense, so he moved the 165-pound Geer to tackle and inserted 245-pound freshman Paul Wood into the lineup at guard..."...they found out they couldn't move him out of the hole, and as a result, they were mixed up on what to do...," Kaufman said...

WKRZ broadcast the Oilers' game at North East when Al Colvenbach scored TDs on runs of 17, 60 and 16 yards...That set up a showdown with Meadville before 3,000 fans at Mitchell...All the scoring was done in the first quarter as the two teams batled to the tie...A 60-yard pass from Colvenbach to Jim Enos on "the ole sleeper play" set up Tom Barnes' 3-yard touchdown plunge for Oil City...Meadville also scored on its first possession, and the game ended with Meadville on the Oil City 10...

Colvenbach added a 65-yard TD run against Millcreek. Bob McFadden scored twice, once on a 35-yard interception... Dick Russell's interception led to freshman Charlie Winger's 5-yard score...

Colvenbach passed 65 yards to Dean Pierce for one touchdown and scored two others on runs of 11 and 35 yards against Franklin...Pierce caught two TD passes, the other covering 18 yards from Ken Fay...He finished the game with 4 catches for 111 yards and an interception...Barnes, a 185-pound fullback, scored twice on runs of 20 and 16 yards...

Colvenbach scored 7 touchdowns and scored 48 points on the season...He also threw for 2 TDs...Barnes scored 6 TDs, Pierce 5 and McFadden 3...Barnes and Colvenbach were elected honorary captains after the season...Guard Pete Swoger received an honorable mention on the all-state team...
