Notes and Stats

Oil City's game with Meadville was postponed twice and then canceled due to field conditions at Mitchell. Not only did heavy rain drench the field, but the lighting system was damaged...So, the Oilers had two weeks off between the Warren and Millcreek games, and then another week off before playing Corry...

The Oilers' only win of the season, against Grove City, included a 76-yard kickoff return by Ed Hartle and a 35-yard scoring pass from Frank Harrington to Terry Wilson...The tie against Milcreek (now McDowell) was impressive considering Millcreek took a 4-1-1 record into the game...

The Oilers were the first team to score on Warren's first team defense. That would be a 12-yard pass from Harrington to Tom Gonzales...The Oilers were within the Dragons 10 three others times, but lost the ball on fumbles...The Oilers reached the 2 in the loss to Titusville, but an illegal use of the hands penalty set them back before they threw an interception...

The Oilers faced a wing-T offense for the first time when they played Greenville...Archie Doddo scored 4 TDs for the Trojans...Franklin, which beat Oil City for the first time in six tries, was coached by Bob Flath, future Oiler wrestling coach...

The play of the year came in the loss to Corry, which had just scored to take an insurmountable 14-6 lead with 13 seconds left...Harrington took the kickoff, waited for the Beavers to converage and then threw a long lateral to tackle Jim Hicks, who rumbled down the sideline 85 yards for a touchdown...Harrington scored on a 9-yard QB sneak earlier in the game...Harrington scored 4 touchdowns and passed for 3 more during the season...
