Notes and Stats Jerry Osborne scored on runs of 37 and 28 yards in a season-opening victory against Titusville, but, from there, the Oilers would begin a 24-game losing streak that wouldn't end until 1961...The two teams combined to lose 10 fumbles in the game...Osborne threw a 25-yard TD pass to Art Toth the next game... Art Toth's brother, Jack Toth, threw an 85-yard TD pass to Ed Glowatski for Edinboro in a 6-6 with Slippery Rock that season. Jack Toth was a 136-pound sophomore QB  that season... Ron Younker, who died May 23, 2002, at the age of 71, was in his only year as Oil City coach, and against Grove City he was matched against  Dick Bestwick, who, as with Younker, was a major college player despite being a lightweight...Younker was a two-year starter at halfback at Penn State and Bestwick was a 175-pound guard at North Carolina who earned All-America mention... Freshman Jack Deets, who started the season as an end, made his first start at guard against Greenville. Younker also was considering starting another freshman, Steve Maher, at the other guard, but went with Larry Tingue instead... The "Industrial Bowl" was up for grabs when the Oilers played at Meadville...Bob Ward matched Osborne with 2 TDs on the season...Dave Winger threw a 15-yard scoring pass to Ed Chalot in the finale against Hickory...
