Notes and Stats

The Oilers were within less than two minutes of winning one game and tying another...

Heartbreak #1: The Oilers had just tied Titusville, 13-13, with 2 minutes left in the opener on Pete Dabrowski's 17-yard TD pass to Steve Maher and Keith Berneberg's kick for the extra point...But the Rockets scored the game-winner with under a minute left on Ron Dewey's 49-yard pass to Eddie Daniels and Rick Hipwell's XP...

Heartbreak #2: Warren pulled out its 20-19 decision with 52 seconds left at Mitchell on an 81-yard TD in which John Wooster lateraled to southpaw Dave Green who threw the scoring pass to Pat Hartnett...The play spoiled a 3-TD passing performance by Dabrowski, who hit three different receivers for the scores: Berneberg, Sam Hovis and  Maher...The 8-0-1 1930 Oilers held a 30-year reunion at the Pine Room of the YMCA and then attended the Warren game...

Derrick sports writer B.J. Ripper picked a lineman and back of the week from area teams every week (including those out of the Derrick coverage area), and honored 150-pound guard Jim Nelles for his play against Warren...Ripper alluded to Nelles' "fast defensive pursuit...that saw him making most of the tackles throughout the game," including a 12-yard sack late in the first half...

Unbeaten Greenville rolled up 305 yards by halftime against the Oilers, and finished with 428, including 411 on the ground...

The Oilers scored 7 TDs all season, and oddly enough, the first 6 came on passes, all from Dabrowski...The first four were to four different receivers: Denny Mylarski, Maher, Hovis and Berneberg...Hovis and Maher  finished with two apiece...The Oilers' seventh TD came on a 65-yard fumble return by Ron Frazier...

Jack Deets was a four-year starter for the Oilers, beginning his career as an end before being switched to a starting guard as a freshman and then eventually being shifted again -- this time to RB...
