Notes and Stats

Chuck Venturella opened the season with back-to-back 100-yard rushing games, but The Derrick didn't report exactly how many yards he had against Titusville when he scored both TDs...He rushed for 113, scored  a touchdown and had another called back -- a 73-yard reception from sophomore QB John Downing -- against Corry...

The Oilers wouldn't win again until beating Hickory on a snow-covered field in which Venturella (9 yards), Tex Pfendler (2) and Jim Shaughnessy (37) scored TDs...Pfendler's TD was set up by tackle Gregg Williams' fumble recovery and  Downing's 24-yard run...

A combination of injuries and illness hurt the
Krug
Oilers...Dave Pearson, Gregg Williams, Jim Cochran, Jim Mohnkern, Dave Wilson and Dick Krug were among those who spent time on the disabled list...

The Oilers and Franklin were tied 6-6 in the third quarter when Downing was ruled down (a Franklin player had hold of his leg) on a play in which he broke the tackle and ran for an apparent first down on the FHS 19...Venturella scored the Oilers' first TD on a 60-yard run...Their final score came on a 73-yard fumble return by Mike Walters, a transfer from Union (Rimersburg)...Venturella finished the season with a team-leading 5 TDs...

Long-time District 10 long jump record-holder Ron Coleman rushed for a touchdown, passed for another and scored a third on a pass reception...The Eagles gained 491 yards in the game...Jim Brumbaugh rushed for more than 200 yards and scored 4 TDs in Greenville's win over the Oilers...

The Oil City Junior High, under the direction of head coach Clem Urban and assistant Crunk Porter, completed a 6-0 season with a 20-13 decision over Corry...Dave Straub threw 2 TD passes to Ron Tarr -- who didn't drop a pass all season -- and Ted Robison scored on a 40-yard run...It was the first Oil City team on any level to go unbeaten since 1949...

The Oilers Club planned to take the Oiler varsity to the Pitt-Syracuse game Nov. 3...
