Oil Slicks

First Section 2 title since Warren and Corry joined the league in 1950!...The win over Franklin clinched it...

Games with Corry and Warren were rained out and played the following Monday night...

Jim Shaughnessy became the first Oiler ever to be
Shaughnessy
named first team All-State. He joined Ridley Township QB John Waller and RBs Mike Reid of Altoona and John Bulicz of Sheffield in the first-team backfield...Shaughnessy rushed for 1,289 yards and scored 21 TDs and 130 points...

Shaughnessy ran for at least 100 yards in every game he "really" played...Many people think he missed the entire Grove City game with injury, but he actually saw action near the end of the game, and had one carry  for "short yardage," according to The Derrick...Apparently that one carry for however many yards it was wasn't included in his season's stats...

The Oilers gained 508 yards total offense against Titusville. TDs included a 64-yard run by Shaughnessy, an 81-yard run by QB Terry Ray and a 61-yard pass from Ray to Bill Slater...Gary Toy returned an interception 57 yards (not for a TD) before the half ended...John Downing kicked two extra points and passed to Shaughnessy for another...The Oilers scored 26 points in the third quarter...

Ray's 41-yard keeper set up the go-ahead TD, an 8-yard run by Shaughnessy, against Corry...The Oilers punted only once -- a 50-yarder by Bill Wright...Jerry Ward made 15 tackles against Grove City...Downing had two interceptions against Warren. Shaughnessy, who rambled for 244 yards, had runs of 41, 20, 11, 21, 19, 48, 13, 16 and 24 yards during the game...

Gary Toy forced a fumble to prevent the apparent tying TD against Greenville. Downing later made another interception...Dave Kennedy had 11 tackles against Meadville...

The Oilers held Franklin's Paul "Red" Law to 11 yards rushing...Dave Straub took a lateral from Ray and threw a 33-yard TD pass to Downing...Shaughnessy gained 126 yards on 16 carries against Franklin, Downing had 65 on 16, Ray 76 on 10 and Straub 44 on 10...

The game before, against Meadville, Shaughnessy was 19-for-118, Straub 12-for-68, Downing 8-for-45 and Ray 9-for-66...Straub was 30-for-173 rushing in his last 3 games...

Ward blocked a punt to set up the winning TD against Hickory, a 26-yard run by Shaughnessy in the fourth quarter...Shaughnessy's 70-yard kickoff return set up his own TD, a 4-yard run,  to tie the game at 19...Dick Titus and Ward each had 13 tackles against the Hornets...

Shaughnessy scored 27 TDs in his career...
