OIl Spills

The Oilers won their first Section 2 title since 1964, and really began hitting their stride with a 15-14 decision over previously unbeaten Warren, the S-2 champion the lasr two seasons...Mike Enos threw a 30-yard pass to Scott Dawson on a third-and-17 play with less than a minute to play, and then threw a pass to Tim Higbee for the PAT to go ahead...Then Gary Frantz tipped a Warren pass and Chris Hale made the interception on the last play of the game to preserve the victory...Higbee made three catches for 45 yards on the winning drive...

The Oilers came from 14 points down in the fog to beat Meadville. Frantz, who rushed for a career-high 182 yards, scored on runs of 76 and 23 yards to put the Oilers ahead. Jim Watkins, a transfer from Meadville, ran the PAT after Frantz's first TD...Oil City clinched a tie for the Section 2 title with the win over Titusville. The game was played in a continuous downpour. Frantz scored three TDs and rushed for 165 yards...The Oilers sealed the title with the win over Franklin in which Enos -- who had been intercepted five times against the Knights in 1974 -- threw for 205 yards and 2 TDs and 3 PATs and Frantz rushed for 101. Frantz and Higbee each scored two TDs...

The Oilers posted two victories the day they played  Elk County Christian. They also got a win by forfeit over Reynolds because of a teachers strike...

Frantz rushed 149 times for 874 yards and scored 11 touchdowns. He also caught 12 passes for 154 yards. Watkins added 294 yards on 57 carries. Frantz finished his three-year career with 1,936 yards on 378 carries and 16 TDs...He also caught 24 passes for 298 yards...

Enos completed 74 of 149 passes for 979 yards and 7 TDs with 9 INTs...Higbee had 24 catches for 324 yards and 4 TDs, and Scott Dawson added 14 receptions for 225 yards and 2 TDs...

Enos finished his career with 1,485 yards passing, completing 110 of 268 for 13 TDs and 28 INTs...

Frantz and John Brown tied for the team lead in defensive points with 445 apiece. Joe Tommasi had 372. Next were Bill Thomas (256), Higbee (253) and Tim McFadden (200)...Frantz led in total tackles with 97...Frantz, Hale and Dawson each had 2 interceptions...Brown recovered 4 fumbles...

Even though the Oilers won the Section 2 title and finished third behind Greenville and Hickory in the Northwest Conference, you'd never know it by the all-star teams, although Pat Patterson was picked Coach of the Year by his NWC peers. (The Oilers returned only five starters from 1974's 1-8 team and was devoid of any 200-pounders. Frantz and junior reserve lineman Joe Frawley were the heaviest Oilers at 195 pounds...)

Anyway, take a look at the all-star teams:
