 Oil Spills

The Oilers registered four shutouts and allowed only 61 points, the fewest since 1936...The defense yielded 158 yards per game, and only one team, Greenville with 261 yards, gained more than 200...Opponents completed only 33 percent of their passes for 334 yards...The Oilers made nine interceptions: Dan Goodrum and Russ Dawson each had two, and Scott Hores, Tim Bills, Bill Welch, Tyler Jones and Jeff Riddle had the others...

The 5-9 Dawson completed 43 of 89 passes for 574 yards and 3 TDs and rushed for 303 yards on 86 carries for 877 yards total offense...Mark Bish was the top receiver with 17 catches for 215 yards. Welch had 9 catches for 153 yards...Jones was the leading rusher with 482 yards on 122 carries...

Dawson, Jones, Riddle and Welch each scored 2 touchdowns. One of Dawson's touchdowns was a 52-yard QB sneak against Meadville...Ron Black kicked a 26-yard field goal in that game...

Only the second game with Titusville counted in the conference standings; the first game was an exhibition when the apparent winning TD, an 11-yard pass from Dawson to Bish, was nullfied for a throwing beyond the line of scrimmage penalty with one second left...Then Black's 33-yard field goal attempt was blocked...The Oilers ended a streak of 7 straight games without scoring, dating back to 1980, when Jones hit paydirt on a 15-yard run against Bradford...
