It didn't take long for the Oil City School Board to name a new head coach.
Apparently taking the advice of retiring coach Paul Stamm, the board tabbed assistant Bill Heber to the post at its Monday, Jan. 28, meeting.
The opening was posted Tuesday, Jan. 15, a day after the board read Stamm's resignation.
"I'm very excited because this is something I've always wanted to do," Heber told The Derrick. "I just hope I can do a good job."
Heber has been doing good job as Stamm's defensive coordinator the last eight years. Oiler defensive units have produced 19 first-team, 17 second-team and 10 honorable mention all-conference players during that time. Two Oiler defenders, Adam Lehnortt and Ben Lynch, received scholarships to West Virginia.
Heber has been on the Oiler coaching staff for 14 years.
"Paul Stamm did a great job and he turned the program," he said. "I was there before Paul came and was there during the transition period and I really appreciate all he's done for me."
Heber played on Oil City's TCAC championship team that posted a 7-1-1 record in 1985. That team allowed a Northwest Conference-low 34 points and 759 yards rushing, made 19 sacks and forced 40 turnovers.
In a related move, Heber stepped down as Oiler track coach. The board named Dan King to replace him. King also serves as the school's wrestling coach.
