Dean Henderson, who played end for the Oilers in the mid-1960s, has coached high school football and boys basketball.
Now he'll try his hand at high school girls basketball.
Henderson will return to coaching after a four-year hiatus to coach the Meadville girls this winter.
"I got out to watch my two sons (Matt and Kyle) go through high school," Henderson told The Derrick. "They're out of high school now and Meadville called and wondered if I'd be interested."
Matt Henderson is a senior at Penn State-Behrend, and Kyle will be a freshman at Edinboro. Daughter Abby -- a basketball player -- will be a seventh-grader at Meadville in the fall.
"The opportunity came up and I figured I'd be following them (MASH girls hoops) anyway," Henderson said.
Henderson, who also played hoops for the Oilers, has never coached on the varsity level in girls basketball, but did help out with Meadville's grade school program for three years.
And he's also been involved in girls basketball as a health and physical education teacher with the Northwestern School District in Albion.
Henderson is excited about Meadville's future. "We're still a young team and the bulk of the roster will be ninth- and 10th-graders. Up to this point everything has been positive and the girls have responded to what we're trying to do," he said.
Henderson began his coaching career in football at Venango Christian, but enjoyed most of his success in basketball at VC, Saegertown and Cambridge Springs. His teams at the three schools have combined for seven league and four District 10 championships.
He guided VC to two District 10 Class A titles and one Crawford County League crown from 1973-78.
After a five-year stint as an assistant at Northwestern from 1978-82, he led Saegertown to a French Creek Valley Conference title during his nine-year stay there from 1981-90.
Henderson coached Cambridge Springs from 1991-98 and took the Blue Devils to five FCVC titles, two District 10 Class AA championships and two appearances in the PIAA western finals in eight years.
